Who and Why?
Why cultureddj.co.uk? There’s a play on words going on here. DJ are my initials, but I am also rather partial to a bit of EDM (electronic dance music)! I'm interested in all things cultural, especially how this affects us. Culture? Theologian Paul Tillich noted that “religion is the substance of culture and culture is the form of religion.” In other words, what we view as important to us, as sacred to us, says something about what holds ultimate value and purpose in our lives (yes, this includes spirituality!). These things shape our experience of living life, helping to make us feel safe and secure as well as bringing purpose and fulfilment. Feeling secure in life, what the psychologist John Bowlby views as having a secure base, is something the majority simply take for granted. Yet this is not always the case. So, I am also interested in how these cultural things help make us feel secure in life. Basically, what we define as ‘culture’ is very important to us - its the stuff that makes us tick.
Is this a religious website? I hold a Christian world-view. Yet, whatever your worldview, what you find here may be of interest to you.
This is a developing page. Additional material and links will be added in due course (last update - April 2024).
David Gillard has been a vicar in East Sussex for some twenty-five years. His doctorate in religious studies follows a keen interest in how our culture shapes how we may 'do' church. He's also very interested in how music shapes how we look at the world around us. He is presently a vicar in East Sussex. David has spoken on his research both locally and further afield!
